The Battle Within

When you embark upon a project of good, you will notice a hidden force that seeks to overwhelm you, to pull you away and to demotivate you. Your mind begins to think about everything and anything. That is what happened when we began Captured Thoughts. Why is that?

“(Iblees) said: ‘Because You have sent me astray, surely, I will sit in wait against them (human beings) on Your straight path. Then I will come to them from before them and behind them, from their right and from their left, and You will not find most of them as thankful ones (i.e. they will not be dutiful to You)’”

[Qur’an – Surah al – A’raaf 7:16-17]

These verses shows us that Iblees (shaytaan, the devil), has set out to lead mankind astray from the straight path and will take all measures to try to distract us from what Allah has ordained so that we may be of those that are forgetful and ungrateful.

Allah azza wa jal, grants us many ways out of these issues so that we may break free from these shackles. So that when we experience this battle within, we can evaluate what is going on and focus.

When Iblees said that, Allaah said to him:

“(Allaah) said: ‘Go, and whosoever of them follows you, surely, Hell will be the recompense of you (all) an ample recompense.

And befool them gradually those whom you can among them with your voice (i.e. songs, music, and any other call for Allaah’s disobedience), make assaults on them with your cavalry and your infantry, share with them wealth and children (by tempting them to earn money by illegal ways usury, or by committing illegal sexual intercourse), and make promises to them.’ But Satan promises them nothing but deceit.

‘Verily, My slaves (i.e. the true believers of Islamic Monotheism) — you have no authority over them. And All-Sufficient is your Lord as a Guardian’”

[Qur’an – al-Israa’ 17:62-64 – interpretation of the meaning]

We see that Allah has granted respite to the devil to try to lead us astray and Allah lists the methods in which Iblees will use to lead us astray and tells us the Shaytaan promises nothing but deceit. Allah protects his slaves, the true believers of Islamic monotheism.

Alhamdulillah as Muslims, we are given the Qur’an and Sunah to learn about all these things, we have these warnings in the book of Allah so that we can understand our tests an trials and focus on striving to attain Jannah.

We must keep going, we must keep trying and we must do all that we can to stack deeds.

We often don’t realise that we may not be committing sins but we may be sitting idle and not doing anything for ourselves or others. This lack of action is also troublesome. It’s also something the shaytaan is happy with, as we aren’t striving to do good deeds, we aren’t forbidding evil and enjoining good – we are spiritually stationary.

Recently after the establishment of Captured Thoughts, I found myself questioning whether I should contribute to this project or leave it to someone else. This thought, this doubt consumed my mind until I felt that I was too full of sin, too busy, and too ignorant to continue this. I began to question my intention and I slowly began to lose hope.

The causes of this were: guilt and whispers of shaytaan.

I felt guilty due to the numerous sins that Allah has mercifully concealed.

I wondered how i could write to invite others to good or on topics when i felt my heart was heavy with the weight of my sins.

After consulting a friend they turned to me and explained the importance of doing small deeds consistently, how this blog should be a stepping stone to do good and lead us to correct ourselves and invite others to the same. After a long talk in which we spoke of the ills on social media and the reason why Captured Thoughts was formed, I came to the conclusion that I must try as hard as possible to share good things, forbid evil and enjoin good online and offline as well as rectify my affairs alongside and keep striving and struggling to do good and this blog could be a tool for this.

After contemplation, I realised that committing to do regular posts can help me in the hereafter and keep me in check. A way to measure myself and trigger self reflection. As long as my intention is correct and I only share what is in line with the Qur’an and Sunnah then there can only be benefit.

These small deeds, small reminders can weigh heavy on our scales. Imagine if every Muslim has an account on social media to share Islam? Just think for a moment…if every practising Muslim that understood the basics of Islam had an account that tweeted/posted about true Islam, how many people it could reach and effect? How many people it could educate and guide? We could essentially fight the evil online with the might of the pen (well keyboard in this instance).

Alhamdulillah for companions that motivate us. For this reason, Captured Thoughts will continue. We ask Allah to keep us sincere and steadfast on the straight path and accept our deeds Ameen. Perhaps one post that guides one person may weight heavy on our scales and guide the writer and reader.

And if there comes to you from Satan an evil suggestion, then seek refuge in Allah. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Knowing.

(Qur’an – Surah Al Fussilat 41:36)

It is important to realise that these doubts that surface when we embark upon a project of khayr may be the whispers of shaytaan and part of his plot to destroy us.

We advise our readers, to continue to do good deeds no matter how great of a number your sins are, to do your adhkar and to make du’a and seek refuge in Allah from shaytaan and make this easy.
